I met my husband about 17 months ago, but really we've probably known "of" each other in some way or other for a lot longer than that. For instance, we lived in the same Stake in Northern VA back in the late 80s. I worked in my brother's Church bookstore for a little while back in the late 90s and David used to come in to said bookstore on occasion. And then there is the 1997 McLean Stake Christmas Program "program" that I found while I was unpacking this past November that had us all listed - David was the Narrator, his late wife, Lydia, was the Chorister for the entire program, and I was the Director for the Bella Vista Ward Choir. Small world...
Okay, so you are wondering "How did we meet officially?" It was totally a blessing from Heavenly Father. You know the type...when you are at a spot in your life when you aren't expecting it, or when you think you least deserve it - the blessing that is. That is when it happens. Heavenly Father did that to me with David.

David "found me" online...yup...sometimes it does work. His sweet 90+ year old mother-in-law, Virginia, told him it was time to meet someone (it had been almost two years since his late wife had died) so Virginia gave him the web address to this online site. Can you imagine? Your 90+ year old mother-in-law is tuned into the internet and knows about online dating. How funny is that? Anyway, he did as he was told and signed up with the site. He says that I was the first person he saw and the only one he contacted. Isn't that sweet?

Reader's digest version to the rest of the story - once I received his message and saw where he was from I wrote him to find out which Stake he was in (there were two in that area) so I could figure out if he was in the same one with my family and if he knew them (and them him). Once we figured out that he did indeed know my family and once I called my Dad and he gave the thumbs up to my writing David things moved right along. We were married May 16, 2009 and David moved down to Williamsburg so I wouldn't have to relocate. That is just one of the many signs that he was truly a blessing in my life.

Wedding day - May 16, 2009
During the past 14 months now I can't even begin to list the many ways that David blesses my life. Some would say he "spoils" me and actually I'm the first one that would say it. For instance, he cooks me dinner "every" night. That's right ladies, he cooks. He never gets angry with me. Oh, he may get disappointed or something may not sit well with him, but he never shows it to me or never yells. He says it isn't worth getting upset over - our relationship is more important.
Now I can tell you that it hasn't rubbed off on me, but I'm trying. What it has done is caused me to have to repent when I do get upset because it makes me realize how dumb I'm being. Usually the stuff I'm getting upset about really is stuff that doesn't matter - like the dishes didn't get cleaned up when I thought they should have. But you know what? He always makes sure the dishes are cleaned up before he comes to bed and makes sure the dishwasher runs. SPOILED!!!!!!!!
I'm not saying David is perfect because he's not (thank goodness). He wouldn't still be here if he was. We are all working on our own issues in this life, our own challenges, in order to return to our Heavenly Father. We all have to struggle a little to make it back home. Do we get our scriptures read every day? Do we say our prayers? Do we try to live like the Savior and help our fellow man? The important thing is that we are trying and that as we try we are loving one another along the way.

September 2009
I was reading a friends blog right before I started writing this and she mentioned another blog that she read recently, so I followed that link as well. As I read that one I found something there that really did touch me that I thought I would share. It is written by a guy by the name of Gary Jackson who just lost his wife to cancer. He actually wrote this before she had passed. You can read his tribute to his wife at:
Kisses for Amy. This is the part that caught my attention.
"Now I know that I am far from a perfect husband and I don't presume to be an expert on relationships but as I have reflected on my own marriage and what has worked and what has not, I have found that our greatest happiness in our marriage came not when my wife was doing all the things that I wanted her to, but when I was doing all the things that I felt she wanted me to. Some how it seems that those efforts were always met with an eventual equal effort on her part to do the same. When we are more concerned about the wants and needs of our spouse than we are with our own wants and needs, we become less self centered and really contribute to the success of our marriages."
It isn't a new concept - I've heard it before - but here is a man who actually put it to work in his own marriage and he's leaving a written testimonial that it actually worked for him. I'm going to really try harder to do more things for David, although I'm sure if you asked him he would say that I do. He's like that. He is a good man, a God fearing man, a man that I love with all my heart. I thank my Heavenly Father every day for blessing me... even when I didn't think I deserved it.
